POSTNIKOV ALEXEI VLADIMIROVICH

Born: March 28, 1939, Moscow.

Education : Moscow Institute of Engineers of Geodesy, Air Surveying and Cartography (now - Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography). Graduated 1965.

1972 Candidate of Science (Ph.D.) “On the Methods of Compiling Historical Maps" .

1989 Doctor of Science (Cartography); Research Professor. Moscow Institute of Geodesy, Air Surveying and Cartography for “A History of Geographical Exploration and Mapping of Russian-Chinese boundary regions”.

2001 Full Professor (History of Science). Ministry of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

1965 – 1967 Research Fellow aboard of the exploring ship “Bataysk”.

1967 - 1972 Editor and author of historical Maps for the Soviet Atlas of World History and Atlas of the History of the USSR.

History of Geography

Historical Geography and History of the Russian Geopolitics and International Relations

History of Cartography

Published more than 200 works, including fourteen books (ten - in Russian, two - in English, one in Pushtu, and one in Russian and in English).


Awards:

In 1987 the book - Postnikov A.V. “The Development of Cartography and use of Old Maps” [in historical research]. Moscow: “Nauka”, 1985. was awarded with the Golden Medal named after N.M. Przevalskii, Geographical Society of the USSR, which was one of the highest awards of the Geographical Society of the USSR for outstanding monographs in the fields of Cartography, Geomorphology and field surveys.

In 2003 the book - Postnikov A.V. Politicians, Spies, and Geographers in the Struggle for Pamir in the XIXth Century, monograph in documents (Moscow: “Pamyatniki istoricheskoy mysli, 2001), was awarded with the Golden Medal named after P.P. Semenov, of the Russian Geographical Society, which is one of the highest awards of the Geographical Society for outstanding monographs in the fields of History of Geography, Geopolitics and Mountains’ studies.

On February 11, 2004 Alexey V. Postnikov was honored with the State Decoration of “The Honorable Scientist of the Russian Federation”.
